Irreverent Youth

Art Gallery of Ontario. Toronto, Canada.

April 2018

The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) commissioned artist Maxwell N. Burnstein for their annual fundraiser Massive: Illusion on April 19, 2018. Burnstein deconstructs the layers of analog collages in an immersive installation titled Irreverent Youth.

To disrupt the hype of ironic artwork online Irreverent Youth explores millennial subtexts like meme’s through analog practices. Burnstein uses an x-acto knife to cut photography by Christopher Sherman taken on 35mm film of real people.

Perceptual space fills in the layers of the free-hanging artworks installed in the galleries Baillie room. Patrons can walk between the layers that are normally adhered together in the artist’s first installation at Ontario’s national museum.
